Two weeks ago, while researching parts for A's old Powerbook G4, I stumbled upon http://www.powerbookmedic.com. The prices are pretty good and they've got some rare stuff. Since my iBook G4 has since been stolen (more or less...a very long story), I was considering upgrading this older one and have been visiting the site every other day to price out parts.
Then, I saw this:

Yes, please. One of those would be just fine. Then maybe I can get back to music and video editing at home. |

| In the 'cool or lame?' category for the day... |

As I'm wearing my new Pixel Skull polo shirt (from http://www.dieselsweeties.com), I was considering how webcomics have been one of my most lasting (and expensive) hobbies. I've been reading them for six years, and if I'm not mistaken, they are fourth after guitar, music, and computer-related expenditures (that don't involve food or beverages).
 Ah, early college.
I read all of the following: http://www.dieselsweeties.com http://www.questionablecontent.net http://www.overcompensating.com http://www.boasas.com http://www.explodingdog.com http://www.asofterworld.com http://www.xkcd.com http://www.qwantz.com http://www.anderslovesmaria.com http://www.wondermark.com http://www.explosm.net
I'm probably missing a couple, but these are my favorites. I have a book, a print, and an iPod and cellphone cover from exploding dog (the latter two are Red Robot themed). I also have an Overcompensating Ghostriding the Whip print in my cube at work, a Softer World book (and Joey Comeau's Overqualified), and a BOASAS vandalism sticker on my Nintendo DS. I'm planning on buying some QC shirts this month, too. But by far, DS has taken the most of my (and some of Angela's) money:
Crush All Hu-mans t-shirt Crush All Hu-mans 2009 t-shirt Crush All Hu-mans stickers (on my car and laptop) I Screw Robots sticker (on Angela's car) Crush All Hu-mans! book Pixel Skull hoodie Pixel Skull polo Electric Sheep shirt (for Angela) Play old video games t-shirt YouTube killed your television t-shirt Sgt. Pixels Non-cannon Fan-fic Blog poster Anger is like a soul that gets things accomplished t-shirt Red Robot figurine Monkeys are good people tote bag
So, yeah. It's no more obsessive than Angela's spending on Audrey Kawasaki stuff, or anyone who buys a bunch of swag from a band. The stuff is there for a reason. It's better to spend on webcomics because you know, without a doubt, who is getting the bulk of your money. And, if you follow them all on twitter, you get a bunch more comedy for the money!
Really though, if you've noticed the pattern, the character responsible for taking all my money is Red Robot. I'm planning on getting a tattoo of him this year. Everybody's got something they latch onto. I mean, look at him:

Minus one for failed car inspections.
Score one for vacations.
Minus one for workflow problems.
Score one for Keep the Change match.
Minus one for hours getting cut.
If I was just the slightest bit rich, I wouldn't have to settle for breaking even. But hey, I ate today and I'm getting paid. Things will get worse eventually. |

| | Sales lady's negotiations on contracts to Fortune 500 companies | ] | Remember kids,
Golden parachutes are the rewards for failure. Take control of a fairly small, reasonably healthy company and merge it with another (preferably foreign) small, healthy company. Next, tank it. Hard. Lose as much of your investors' money as possible. Then, as negotiated in your original contract, you will receive a multi-million dollar payout as the board asks you to step down citing non-performance.
And, should the bank or insurance institution backing your newly-merged company fail due to overspending on lobbying and poorly chosen, profit-driven investment risks, always take heart that the government will bail everyone out in the end. There's no reason not to buy that third house, after all! You certainly won't lose it to foreclosure, only to have it resold so the government can earn back some of its money!
Love always, A know-nothing, bleeding-heart, pansy-boy liberal. |
